The experience

The day starts with a vegetarian breakfast at Oonnukal, about two hours from Kochi on the way to Munnar. From there the route passes Cheeyappara waterfall (a 15-to-20-minute stop where the rocks are too slippery for swimming but the cascade works for photos), and then climbs toward the hill station. Kundala Dam, built in 1946 as Asia's first arch dam, sits between the town and Top Station. It takes 15 to 20 minutes to walk the lake shore and photograph the water against the surrounding hills. Boating and horse riding are available for an extra fee if you want them.

Mattupetty Dam, 13 kilometers from Munnar town, is where the tour spends more time. Unlike Kundala, it has a tourist center with a coffee shop, washroom, and a children's park. Speed boats run on the lake. The itinerary suggests walking the dam itself for the best photographs, since vehicles cannot park on it. Between the two dams you pass through tea plantations, Munnar's defining landscape, and stop at a rose garden run by the KTDC Floriculture Centre if time allows. Lunch happens in Munnar town around 1 p.m., with a Rs 400 food voucher per person to spend at local restaurants. Anything over that amount you pay directly.

After lunch the guide takes you to Rajamalai in Eravikulam National Park. The park protects the Nilgiri Tahr, a rare mountain goat found nowhere else, and the hike takes roughly an hour through grassland and shoal forest to reach viewpoints for Anamudi (the highest peak south of the Himalayas at 2,695 meters), and the valley below. The park closes in February and March for breeding season. Minimum two hours are needed to complete the visit. You return to Kochi the same evening.

Top questions

Can I swim or bathe at Cheeyappara waterfall on this tour?

No. Cheeyappara's rocks are slippery and dangerous for swimming, so the stop is for photographs and a short walk only, lasting 15 to 20 minutes.

What is the Nilgiri Tahr and where do I see it in Eravikulam National Park?

The Nilgiri Tahr is a rare mountain goat found only in the Western Ghats. Eravikulam National Park was created to protect it and its grassland habitat. You hike roughly an hour through the park's shoal-grassland ecosystem to reach viewpoints where the tahr live, and you can also see Anamudi, the highest peak south of the Himalayas.

Is boating included at Mattupetty Dam or Kundala Dam?

Boating is not included. Both dams offer speed boats and other water activities for an additional fee you pay on the day. The tour includes entry to the dams and time to photograph them.

What happens if I want to skip the rose garden or one of the dams?

The itinerary is set by the guide and arranged around the lunch break at 1 p.m. The rose garden has an entry fee of Rs 50 per person. If you prefer not to visit, you can stay with the vehicle or explore the town instead.

How much time do I spend hiking in Eravikulam National Park?

The hike takes roughly one hour, and the park requires a minimum of two hours total to complete the visit, including time at viewpoints. The park is closed in February and March for breeding season.
