The experience
The tour begins in darkness. Tiger Hill is the highest point in the Darjeeling area, and an early morning arrival means you're there when the sun strikes the snow-capped Kanchenjunga range (the third highest peak in the world) in a blaze of changing colors. After the sunrise, a short walk downhill takes you to Sincheal temple, dedicated to the Hindu goddess Durga. The meadows around Tiger Hill are part of a nature preserve suitable for a brief stop before moving on.
The day then moves through Darjeeling's layered history. Batasia Loop, built almost five kilometres from town, is a 360-degree railway turn engineered to help steam trains navigate the steep terrain. Within the loop sits a war memorial honoring those who died in India's conflicts since 1947, and a local market sells bags and decorative items. Ghum Monastery, about eight kilometres away near Ghoom railway station, is the largest of Darjeeling's three monasteries, built in 1875 and housing a 15-foot image of Jampeyang, the Buddha of the future, along with a 108-volume collection of Tibetan Buddhist texts. The Japanese Peace Pagoda, the highest free-standing structure in town, offers a place for meditation and interaction with resident Japanese monks.
Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park is famous for red pandas seen in their natural habitat, and also houses snow leopards, blue sheep, Siberian tigers and black bears: species you may not see together anywhere else. A cable car runs from Singamari to the Tukvar Tea Estate valley. Among the tea plantations around Darjeeling, Chitrey Tea Garden specializes in a range of tea bushes and offers views of Kanchenjunga while you sip the famous Darjeeling tea. The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, perched with Kanchenjunga in the background, displays mountaineering history and Himalayan life across three museum sections.
