The experience

The day starts before sunrise at Tiger Hill, the highest point in the Darjeeling area, where you watch the sun strike the snow-capped Kanchenjunga range in changing colors. From there, a short walk downhill reaches Sincheal temple, dedicated to the Hindu goddess Durga. The route then moves through the Batasia Loop, a 360-degree railway turn built nearly five kilometres from town to help steam trains navigate steep terrain. A war memorial inside the loop honors those lost in India's conflicts since 1947, and a local market sells bags and decorative items.

The tour includes Ghum Monastery, built in 1875 and the largest of Darjeeling's three monasteries, where a 15-foot image of Jampeyang (the Buddha of the future) and a 108-volume Tibetan Buddhist canon are housed. Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park follows, known for red pandas in their natural habitat and rare species like snow leopards, blue sheep, and Siberian tigers rarely seen together elsewhere. The Japanese Peace Pagoda, the highest free-standing structure in town, sits near a traditional Japanese temple where you can meditate and interact with resident monks. Photography is permitted.

A tea garden stop (often Happy Valley or Chitrey Tea Garden) lets you sit among the tea bushes with views of Kanchenjunga while sipping Darjeeling tea. The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, one of the world's top mountaineering colleges, houses a museum with three sections: Himalayan Life, Mount Everest Expedition, and Mountaineering History. The day also includes the Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre, founded in 1959 to aid Tibetans who crossed the Himalayas, now home to 130 families and active in handicrafts and artisan training. Private transport, bottled water, parking fees, and hotel pickup and drop-off are included. An air-conditioned vehicle carries the group throughout.
