The experience

Six hours and roughly 90 kilometers of driving take you through three distinct corners of Rajasthan's past. Pickup happens at 8:30 a.m. from your Jaipur hotel, and the first stop is the Monkey Temple (Galtaji), about 10 kilometers away in the Aravalli hills. A Hindu pilgrimage site where you'll encounter the monkeys that give it its name. From there, a two-hour drive brings you to Abhaneri and the Chand Baori stepwell, where you'll have lunch at a local spot before exploring the site itself. The stepwell is 13 stories deep with symmetric triangular steps descending to water at the bottom, and at 1200–1300 years old, it predates the Taj Mahal by centuries. It was built as both a water management solution in the desert and a natural cooler during the hot months.

After Abhaneri, the route continues to Bhangarh Fort, the day's final destination. The fort sits at the edge of the Sariska Tiger Reserve and was established in 1573 as a residence for Madho Singh, the younger brother of Emperor Akbar's general Man Singh I. The ruins carry a reputation for being haunted (trespassing between sunset and sunrise is legally prohibited), and the guide will walk you through the history and the legends that have accumulated around the site. The return drive to Jaipur takes about 90 minutes.
