Step-by-step itinerary

Tea plantation and factory tour

  • Visit nursery
  • Participate in tea plucking
  • Taste various teas
  • Take guided factory tour

The experience

Amchong Tea Estate spans over 1,500 acres of tea gardens just outside Guwahati. The tour starts in the nursery, then moves into the fields where you pluck tea leaves yourself: the same work the estate's 500 workers do year-round. You'll see how the leaves are sorted and graded, and the guide explains what makes Assam tea distinct from other regions. The estate produces over 10,00,000 kilograms annually, so there's always tea in process.

The factory visit is the core of the morning. You walk through the production line with your guide, who points out the difference between orthodox tea (whole leaves, slower oxidation) and CTC tea (crushed, faster processing). Both methods happen on-site. After the factory, you sit down to taste several teas made right there. The guide pours and explains what you're tasting as you go. Bottled water and tea or coffee are included throughout.

The whole experience runs two hours. Your guide speaks English or Hindi, and the tour moves at a pace that lets you ask questions and take photographs in the gardens. The restroom is on-site. This is a working estate, not a museum, so you're seeing the actual process that feeds the regional tea trade.
