The experience

Ajanta and Ellora Caves sit at the heart of this two-day route. The Ajanta caves (30 rock-cut chambers carved into the rugged cliffs along the Waghora River gorge) date back centuries and hold some of India's finest Buddhist art. The Ellora complex spreads across two kilometers and contains 34 caves spanning Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain monuments built between the 6th and 10th centuries. Priority entry means you move past the queues that form at both sites, so you spend your time inside the caves rather than waiting at the gates.

The tour also takes you to Bibi Ka Maqbara, a 17th-century Mughal mausoleum in Aurangabad itself, often called the Taj Mahal of the Deccan for its resemblance to the original. Daulatabad Fort, perched 200 meters above the surrounding plains on a conical hill, rounds out the itinerary: a 12th-century stronghold with panoramic views and the defense systems that once protected the Delhi Sultanate's southern capital. The route also includes the dargah of Sheikh Zainuddin, a peaceful Sufi shrine beside which Aurangzeb rests.
