The Experience

First thing I noticed at Freysnes was how the air actually tasted cold — like you could bite it. Our group was small, just seven of us huddled by the equipment truck while Hákon (our guide, born nearby) handed out helmets and those intimidating crampons. I’d never worn them before; felt awkward at first, like walking in borrowed shoes. The 4x4 ride to the glacier’s edge was bumpy enough that someone joked about Icelandic massage chairs. I laughed harder than I meant to — nerves, maybe.

Standing at the foot of Falljökull, it didn’t look real. Blue streaks ran through the ice, way brighter than I’d expected. Hákon showed us how to strap on everything properly (he checked twice), then we started climbing — slow at first, boots crunching into snow that squeaked under each step. He pointed out these deep holes called moulins where meltwater disappears into the glacier’s belly. Honestly, peering down one made my stomach flip. You could hear water rushing somewhere below; kind of unsettling but weirdly peaceful too.

I tried asking Hákon how often the glacier changes shape — he shrugged and said “every day.” That stuck with me. We crossed over a narrow bridge of ice above a crevasse; my hands were sweating inside my gloves even though it was freezing outside. At one point someone slipped (not me this time) but it was fine — everyone just waited and joked about learning new dance moves on ice. The clouds kept shifting so sometimes everything glowed blue-white, then suddenly you’d see black volcanic ash trapped in the ice like old secrets.

We stopped for a break near a frozen waterfall — didn’t expect to hear birds up here but there they were, echoing off the ice walls. My water bottle tasted metallic and I still think about that view looking back down towards Skaftafell valley. It’s not something you can photograph right; you have to stand there feeling tiny and kind of lucky to be part of it for an afternoon.
