The Experience

Ever wonder what it’s like to stand inside a glacier? I didn’t really know what to expect from this Vatnajökull ice cave tour—just that I’d seen those photos with the crazy blue ceilings and thought, yeah, maybe that’s Photoshop. But standing there, helmet slightly askew (I never get straps right), you actually see it: the light filtering through thick ice, all these shifting blues and silvers. The hike across the glacier started slow—crampons crunching over packed snow while Einar pointed out crevasses and explained how these caves form when the meltwater freezes or moves away.
