The Experience
We were already bouncing along in that big SuperJeep before I realized how far off the main road we’d gone — just endless mossy plains and then suddenly these sharp blue-white streaks ahead. Our guide, Sigrún, grinned as she handed out crampons and axes, explaining how Falljökull means “falling glacier.” She made it sound like the glacier was alive, always moving, which was a bit unsettling if I’m honest. The air smelled faintly metallic and cold — not just cold like winter but cold like something ancient.
I fumbled with my crampons at first (pro tip: don’t overthink it), but Sigrún was patient and showed me how to get them snug. The first step onto the ice felt weirdly soft on top but hard underneath — almost like walking on frozen bread. There was this hush, except for the crunch of our spikes and little trickles of meltwater somewhere below. Sigrún pointed out these blue crevasses that looked way deeper than I wanted to imagine. She told us about the mountains around Vatnajökull and how they shape the weather here — apparently even locals can’t predict it.
At one point, someone tried to pronounce “Falljökull” properly and everyone laughed (me included — Icelandic is no joke). We stopped for a minute just to look back at the valley — honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so small in such a wide-open place. The wind picked up and stung my cheeks, but I kind of liked it; made me feel awake. After an hour or so wandering across the glacier, we headed back down toward the waiting 4x4. My legs were tired in that good way you get after doing something new.
