The experience
The meeting point is at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where you board a Super Jeep built to cross the glacier's unstable terrain. The vehicle takes you onto Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe, to reach a natural blue ice cave and the surrounding formations: ice tunnels, caverns and walls shaped by meltwater and the glacier's constant shift. One of the caves is known as "Dragon Glass" from the Game of Thrones filming locations in Iceland.
Your guide speaks English and leads the group across the ice, pointing out the different formations and explaining how the glacier creates them. All safety gear is provided: helmet and crampons so you can walk safely on the ice. The tour lasts three hours and operates regardless of weather, so bring layers and waterproof clothing. The operator notes the tour suits all fitness levels, though walking on ice with crampons requires basic mobility.
National park fees are included in the price. Food and drinks are not. Bring your own or plan to eat before or after at Jökulsárlón, where cafés and restaurants are nearby. Public transportation options exist in the area, though most travelers arrange their own transport to the meeting point or book a separate transfer.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (6 to 11 years). Children under 6 can't be included in the booking.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What exactly is the blue ice cave, and how is it formed?
The blue ice cave is a natural hollow carved into Vatnajökull by meltwater flowing beneath and through the glacier. The ice appears blue because the glacier's dense, compressed ice absorbs red wavelengths of light and reflects blue back to the eye. The cave's shape changes constantly as the glacier moves and melts.
Do I need climbing experience or special fitness to walk on the glacier?
No climbing experience is needed. The tour is suitable for all fitness levels, and crampons are provided to grip the ice. You'll be walking on relatively flat glacier terrain with a guide, not ascending steep slopes or technical climbing sections.
What should I wear for a glacier tour in Iceland?
Dress in waterproof layers: a warm base layer, an insulating mid-layer, and a waterproof jacket and pants on top. Wear warm socks and waterproof boots. Bring a hat and gloves. The weather changes fast on the glacier, and you'll be standing on ice for three hours, so dressing warmly and staying dry is essential.
Is the tour cancelled if the weather is bad?
The tour operates in all weather conditions. Iceland's glacier weather is unpredictable, and cancellations are rare. The Super Jeep and your guide are equipped for wind, rain and snow. If conditions become unsafe, the operator will reschedule or refund you, but this is uncommon.
How do I get to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon for the meeting point?
Jökulsárlón is in southeast Iceland, about four hours' drive from Reykjavík. Most visitors rent a car or book a separate transfer. The tour operator does not include hotel pickup from Reykjavík or other areas, so you'll need to arrange your own transport to the lagoon.
