You start from your hotel in Reykjavik and head into the highlands with a driver who knows the route and the stories behind it. You walk the rift valley between them, crossing lava fields and seeing the geological seam that splits Iceland. The driver waits while you explore, then points out the landscape as you drive toward Haukadalur Valley, passing farms and the shores of Laugarvatn Lake.

At the Geysir Geothermal Area, Strokkur erupts every few minutes, shooting hot water into the air surrounded by steaming pools and mineral-colored ground. From there, the route continues to Gullfoss Waterfall, where the Hvítá River drops in two stages into a deep canyon: the scale and power of it are not something photographs prepare you for. If you want to add time in the water, the Secret Lagoon is a natural hot spring away from the main tourist crowds, though entry is separate from the tour price. The full loop takes eight hours including stops and the scenic drive back to Reykjavik.
