The Experience

The day didn’t start as planned — I’d forgotten my towel (classic), but our guide, Jón, just grinned and said not to worry. We set off from Reykjavik in his slightly battered Land Cruiser, which felt more trustworthy than shiny. The city faded fast, replaced by these wild lava fields and moss that looked almost fake. Jón pointed out some old sheep pens on the way to Thingvellir, and I tried to pronounce it right — he laughed and told me to just say “Thing-vet-lir.” The wind there was sharp enough to wake you up if the coffee hadn’t yet.

I didn’t expect the silence between those tectonic plates. It’s weirdly peaceful, just rocks and water and this sense of being somewhere really old. By the time we reached Fludir village for the Secret Lagoon, clouds had rolled in and it started drizzling lightly. Slipping into that hot spring with steam curling around us was pure relief; my skin still smelled faintly of sulfur hours later. There were locals chatting quietly in Icelandic nearby, just part of their routine — made me wish I lived close enough for this kind of afternoon.
