You’ll start by soaking in Laugarás Lagoon’s geothermal pools before heading out to see Geysir’s eruptions and feel Gullfoss’s spray on your skin. Walk between tectonic plates at Þingvellir while your local guide shares stories and small details you’d miss alone. It’s a day of warmth, wild weather, laughter, and landscapes that stick with you long after.
I didn’t expect to start the Golden Circle tour already barefoot, shuffling across warm wooden planks with steam curling around my face. Our guide, Hildur, joked that the hardest part would be leaving the lagoon — she wasn’t wrong. The water at Laugarás Lagoon felt thick and soft somehow, warmer than I thought possible under that pale Icelandic sky. I tried the cold plunge (lasted maybe five seconds) before drifting back to the infinity edge and watching a crow hop along the fence. It smelled faintly of minerals and pine needles — not unpleasant, just sharp enough to remind you this isn’t a hotel pool.
After we finally peeled ourselves out (towels included if you go for Lerki admission — trust me, worth it), we piled into the van and headed for Geysir. Strokkur erupted right as I was unwrapping a sandwich — everyone jumped, someone swore in French, and our group just started laughing. The ground hissed and spat around us, puddles rimmed with orange minerals. Hildur explained how “geyser” is actually an Icelandic word; Li laughed when I tried to say it in Icelandic — probably butchered it.
Gullfoss was next. The wind there is something else; it whips straight through your jacket and carries mist up from the canyon so your cheeks sting a little. We stood near the edge while Hildur pointed out where rainbows sometimes appear if you’re lucky (we weren’t). Still, there’s something about that roar — you feel it in your chest more than your ears. Last stop was Þingvellir where you can literally walk between continents on a path lined with mossy lava rock. It’s strange thinking about all that history under your boots. I still think about that view over the lake at dusk — blue light everywhere, kind of haunting but peaceful too.
