The Experience

The minibus picks you up from your Reykjavik hotel and heads south into the Icelandic countryside. After about 45 minutes, you stop in Hveragerði for restrooms and a chance to stretch—there's a bakery and an earthquake exhibition if you want to look around. Then the drive continues to Gullfoss, one of Iceland's most powerful waterfalls, where the glacial river Hvítá plunges down a two-step drop. Viewing platforms let you get close to the spray and the roar; the Gullfoss center has restrooms, a cafeteria and gift shops if you need anything before moving on.

At Geysir in Haukadalur, you have time to walk the hot springs field and watch Strokkur erupt roughly every five minutes—the geyser shoots water high into the air on a predictable rhythm. This is also where the group breaks for lunch; the Glíma restaurant at the Geysir center serves different diets and preferences. After eating, you head to Thingvellir National Park, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are visibly pulling apart. You can walk down into the rift valley itself and stand between the two continents—they move apart about 2 centimeters every year. Thingvellir is also where Iceland's oldest parliament was established in 930 AD, and it became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004. There's time to explore on foot, and restrooms and coffee shops are available in the area.

The final stop is Kerið crater, a volcanic formation 6,500 years old with a small lake inside. The crater's moss, red volcanic rock and light blue water create a striking contrast. Most visitors walk down to the lakeside to take in the landscape before heading back to Reykjavik, where you're dropped off at your hotel.
