The Experience

I almost missed the bus because I couldn’t find my other glove—classic me. The driver just grinned and waved me on, like it happens all the time in Reykjavik. We set off for Thingvellir first, and our guide Sigrún told us about Alþingi being the world’s oldest parliament while we crunched over frozen grass. The air was sharp, you could smell snow somewhere nearby even though it wasn’t falling yet. Standing where two continents meet above ground is stranger than I expected; you can actually see the earth pulling apart in slow motion.

By midday we were at Geysir, which was louder than I thought—Strokkur shoots up so suddenly that everyone jumps at least once (I did twice). There’s this sulfur smell that sticks to your scarf a bit, but it’s weirdly comforting after a while. Lunch was on our own, so I grabbed a lamb soup from a tiny café near Gullfoss. It warmed my hands more than anything else could have. Gullfoss itself is just raw power; the spray hits your face before you even see the falls properly. I tried to take a photo but honestly, you can’t really capture that sound or cold wetness.

Back in Reykjavik for a couple hours to thaw out—Sigrún said it’s normal to change into every layer you own before heading back out for the Northern Lights tour. When we left again after dinner (I went for fish stew), the city lights faded fast behind us and everyone got quiet for a bit. Our guide kept checking some app for aurora activity, muttering things in Icelandic under her breath (I wish I knew what she was saying). We stopped somewhere outside town where it was just black sky and snow crunching under boots.

The lights weren’t guaranteed—she reminded us of that—but suddenly there they were: green ribbons flickering above us like someone waving silk scarves across the stars. Everyone went silent except one guy who just whispered “whoa.” I still think about how cold my toes were and how none of us wanted to leave anyway.
