The Experience

I’ll admit, I was a little nervous when I saw the Superjeep parked outside our Reykjavik hotel. Those tires are almost comically huge—like something out of a snowstorm action movie. Our guide, Björn (he said to just call him B), grinned and handed us up with a “Ready for some Icelandic bumps?” The inside smelled faintly of leather and coffee, and everyone was still waking up as we pulled out of the city. I kept thinking: this is not your average tour bus.

The first stop was Thingvellir. It’s strange standing between two tectonic plates—B pointed to a crack in the earth and told us Vikings used to gather here over a thousand years ago. There’s this cold, mineral smell in the air and the ground feels spongy underfoot. Some folks were quiet, just listening to wind in the moss. Then we headed for Geysir; Strokkur erupted right as I tried to snap a photo (missed it by half a second). The steam smells like boiled eggs—sulfur everywhere—and you can feel the heat even from a few meters back. I tried saying “geysir” with an Icelandic accent and got some laughs from B.

After that came Gullfoss waterfall. You hear it before you see it—a heavy roar that sort of vibrates in your chest. Mist everywhere, and my glasses fogged up instantly. We grabbed lunch at Gullfoss Café (I went for the lamb soup—salty, hearty, perfect after all that cold). Then came the real adventure: B took us off-road toward Langjökull glacier. The Superjeep bounced so much my teeth clicked together at one point; honestly, it was funnier than scary. Out there it’s just white and blue for miles, wind howling around the jeep. We stopped for photos but mostly just stood there squinting at all that space.

On the way back we made a quick stop at Faxi waterfall—smaller than Gullfoss but almost peaceful by comparison. By then everyone was quieter, maybe tired or just full of whatever you call that feeling after seeing so much raw landscape in one day. Sometimes I still think about that cold wind on my face up on Langjökull—it felt like being somewhere nobody else could find you.
