The experience

The day starts with pickup from your Reykjavik hotel and a drive to Thingvellir National Park, where you'll stand in the rift valley between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. The ground is pulling apart here at a measurable rate. The same ground is where Iceland's parliament was founded over a thousand years ago. From there the route heads to Haukadalur and the Geysir geothermal area, where hot springs, steam vents and blue algae pools dot the landscape. Strokkur, the most active geyser, erupts roughly every five minutes, so you'll likely see it happen.

Gullfoss waterfall is the final major stop before lunch. The water drops into a deep gorge in two stages, and the scale is what makes it stand out. It's high, powerful and dramatic enough that Icelanders call it the queen of their waterfalls. Lunch happens at Gullfoss Café, which sits near the falls and serves Icelandic meat soup and other local options. After eating, the tour shifts into what makes this version different: an off-road drive into the Langjökull highlands. The Superjeep's 40-inch wheels handle the rough terrain as you move through glacier country and take in views from inside the vehicle, with occasional stops to step out. A small waterfall called Faxi comes next, then the drive back to Reykjavik.

The vehicles are Land Rover Defenders modified for Iceland's conditions, fitted with leather seats, WiFi, GPS, air conditioning and first-aid equipment. The guides are experienced drivers who know how to handle these big cars on both highways and wilderness terrain. Groups stay small (a maximum of 10 people per Superjeep), which means the vehicle doesn't feel crowded even on a full day.
