Reykjavik Food Walk: 5-6 local restaurants with guide
Eight tastings across Reykjavik's actual food scene, not the tourist version
A three-hour walking food tour of Reykjavik that visits 5-6 local restaurants, food trucks and establishments with a live English-speaking guide. You taste over eight dishes of authentic Icelandic cuisine — lamb, fresh fish, homemade ice cream, hot dogs from the famous stand — while walking past Hallgrímskirkja church, the statue of Ingólfur Arnarson on Arnarhóll hill, and the main shopping streets of Laugavegur and Skólavörðustígur. The tour meets at Harpa concert hall and suits all fitness levels; dietary needs and food allergies can be accommodated with advance notice.
Step-by-step itinerary
Reykjavik food and city walking tour
- Meet at Harpa concert hall
- Explore Harpa building
- Walk to Arnarhóll hill
- See Ingólfur Arnarson statue
- Stroll Laugavegur and Skólavörðustígur streets
- Visit Hallgrímskirkja church
- Enjoy local food at 5-6 restaurants
The Experience
The tour starts at Harpa, the concert hall on the waterfront, and moves through downtown on foot. Your guide leads you past Hallgrímskirkja, one of Reykjavik's most recognizable landmarks, and up Arnarhóll hill to see the statue of Ingólfur Arnarson, the first settler of Iceland. You walk the main shopping and dining streets — Laugavegur and Skólavörðustígur — where the guide stops to point out the neighborhood's real food culture instead of what ends up in the typical Iceland checklist.
The eating happens at 5-6 stops across the three hours. These range from food trucks to sit-down restaurants, and the guide chooses them based on what's in season and what's actually good. You'll taste Icelandic lamb, fresh catch of the day, the homemade ice cream made from a family recipe, and a hot dog from the famous Icelandic hot dog stand. Over the course of the walk you'll have more than eight tastings. The guide stays with you the whole time and knows the owners and the stories behind the food.
If you have food allergies or dietary restrictions, send a message before booking and the operator will adjust the stops to fit what you can eat. Public transportation is nearby if you need it, and the walk is suitable for all fitness levels. Show up hungry — that's the only real requirement.
