The experience
The day starts at the Skaftafell Booking Center, where your guide briefs you on safety and the route ahead, then gears you up with crampons, an ice pick, helmet and specialized climbing boots (sizes 36–50 EU). A 20-minute 4x4 drive takes you to Falljökull glacier at the base of Vatnajökull. From there, the real work begins: you hike across the ice, passing moulins and ice formations while your guide explains what you're walking through, and you can drink directly from glacier meltwater as you go.
The climbing comes next. You'll scale ice walls using your crampons and ice axe, testing your balance and strength on vertical sections. The guide demonstrates technique and stays with you throughout, adjusting the difficulty to match the group's ability. Descending into crevasses (the deep cracks that split the glacier) gives you a close look at the ice's interior and the sheer scale of what you're standing on. This is not a walk across the glacier. It's hands-on climbing and scrambling over roughly 8 kilometers with significant elevation gain.
Small groups keep the experience personal and allow the guide to focus on each climber's safety and progress. All technical gear is included, so you arrive with nothing but your own fitness and readiness to push yourself. Bring warm, waterproof layers (rentals are available for a fee if you don't have them), and expect to be tired and exhilarated by the end.

Is this one for you?The 7.5-hour commitment means this fills most of your day, leaving time for a meal before or after but not much else. Book this if you have a full day to dedicate to one activity and the fitness to handle sustained climbing and hiking. If you want to combine glacier time with other sights around Skaftafell, a shorter glacier walk might suit you better.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is Vatnajökull and why does it matter for this activity?
Vatnajökull is Europe's largest glacier, covering an area the size of a small country, and it dominates East Iceland's landscape. Climbing on it means you're on a massive, dynamic ice field where the terrain changes with the seasons, and the scale of the ice walls and crevasses is genuinely imposing: far larger than smaller glacier activities elsewhere.
Do I need ice climbing experience to do this?
No prior experience is required. Your guide teaches you how to use crampons and an ice axe, demonstrates climbing technique on the ice, and stays with you the entire time. What you do need is high physical fitness and the ability to walk and climb for 7.5 hours with significant elevation gain. This is a challenging day.
What happens if the weather turns bad?
Glacier conditions and weather are monitored closely by your guide. If conditions become unsafe for climbing, the guide adjusts the route or the activities to keep you safe. This might mean a longer hike and less technical climbing, but the day still goes ahead unless the glacier itself is inaccessible.
Are meals and drinks included?
Food and drinks are not included, so bring your own snacks, lunch and water. You can drink glacier meltwater along the way, but carrying enough calories for a 7.5-hour physical day is essential.
What should I wear, and what's provided?
Wear warm, waterproof layers: a jacket and pants that keep out wind and meltwater spray. Crampons, ice axes, helmets and specialized climbing boots are all provided by the operator. Waterproof jacket and pants rentals are available on-site for a fee if you don't have your own.
