Our guide stopped at the Castle Bazaar—that ornate beaux arts building framing the start of the climb—and pointed out how cruise groups rarely make it past the main square because their ships only give them three hours on land. From there, the walk goes up through the Castle garden toward the Royal Palace and Sándor Palace, the current office of Hungary's President. You pass the King Matthias fountain, walk along the southern battlement with views straight across to Parliament, and learn the stories behind the buildings that frame the squares as you move through them.

The Buda Castle walking tour includes entry to Matthias Church, where the guide walks you through the interior and explains the significance of the space—though if there's a concert or wedding that day, the church stays closed to visitors, so the itinerary shifts. You also see Fisherman's Bastion from the lower section, where the view of Parliament is clearest, and pass the Mary Magdalene church on the way back. The pace is deliberately slow.
