The Experience

The engine fires up and you're rolling straight into mud-thick jungle trails, creek beds cutting across your path, the Caribbean visible in flashes between the trees. You're driving a fully automatic ATV or Polaris dune buggy—no experience needed—and your bilingual guide is leading the way through terrain that feels genuinely untamed. Iguanas scatter as you pass. Tropical birds call from the canopy. The guide stops at hilltop lookouts where the view opens up to open water, and you realize how small the island actually is from up there.

After the ride, you pull into Mayan Eden Eco Park, a 30-acre wildlife sanctuary where rescued capuchin monkeys move through the trees and sloths hang exactly where you'd expect them to. The naturalist guide walks you across hanging canopy bridges—they sway a little, which is the point—and talks about what the park actually does: rehabilitation, release back into the wild, reforestation.
