The experience

What makes Maya Key different is that it brings Mayan culture to you instead of sending you to the mainland ruins of Copan. The island sits just offshore from Roatan and holds a recreated Mayan plaza, a ball court where you can see how an ancient sport was played, and a Mayan Interpretation Center that walks through Honduras' archaeological history. An Ethnic Honduran Art Exhibit Center rounds out the cultural side. None of this requires a ferry to the mainland or hours of travel time.

Beyond the Mayan sites, the island is built around activities you choose as you go. You have access to a private secluded beach, snorkeling in the coral reefs, paddle-boarding, a pool, tropical gardens to walk, and an animal rescue center tour. There's also shopping and dining on-site if you want to eat. The operator can reserve you an authentic island lunch for around $15 per person, paid when you arrive. The whole day runs four to five hours, and you travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with a live guide who speaks English or Spanish.

Your hotel pickup is included, so if you're staying anywhere on Roatan and don't have a rental car, this solves the logistics of getting to the island. The guide handles the route and the stops. You decide how long to spend at each one, whether that's an hour on the beach, time at the animal rescue center, or a walk through the gardens and the Mayan plaza.
