The day starts early: you're picked up from your Antigua hotel and driven to Guatemala City Airport for a 5:45am flight to Flores. You land at 6:45am and transfer directly to Tikal National Park, which spreads across more than 341 square miles of Guatemalan jungle and holds thousands of separate ruin structures. Your guide meets you there and walks you through the site's major complexes—the Central Acropolis with its maze of courtyards and small temples, Complex Q and R with their twin pyramid structures, and the two massive temples that face each other across the Great Plaza.

Temple I, the Temple of the Grand Jaguar, is a limestone stepped pyramid dated to around 732 AD; Temple II, the Temple of the Masks, sits opposite it on the west side of the plaza. Both are built in styles that span the Classic Period. Temple IV, at the western edge of the site core, is the tallest—65 meters high—and the views from the top carry across the jungle canopy. Your guide explains the history and architecture as you move between them, and you have time to absorb the scale and detail of each one. Lunch is included at the park before you have free time to wander on your own.

The return flight leaves Flores at 5:30pm and lands in Guatemala City at 6:30pm; a driver meets you there and takes you back to your Antigua hotel. The whole day is 17 hours door-to-door, but the flight eliminates the long overland drive and leaves you with a full afternoon and early evening in the ruins themselves. After you land in Flores at 6:45am and transfer to the park, you have the full morning and afternoon to explore the temples and plazas with your guide, plus free time after lunch. You leave the park to head back to Flores Airport around 4:30pm for your 5:30pm flight, giving you roughly eight to nine hours on site.

What is Temple IV like, and can I climb it?
