Once you arrive at the base, the hike begins at a smooth, gradual pace—the kind of slope that does not demand scrambling or technical footwork. The ascent to the summit takes 1.5 hours, and as you climb, the landscape shifts from forest to volcanic terrain. At the top, you get time to stand in the panoramic views before beginning the descent, which takes about an hour on the way back down.

The return journey to your hotel covers the same 2 hours by road, giving you a chance to rest on the bus after the physical work. A certified guide from the Guatemalan Tourism Board Commission leads the group throughout, speaking English or Spanish depending on your preference. The tour operates in most weather, so bring layers and appropriate footwear—the operator will reschedule you or refund fully if conditions become unsafe.

If you want to skip the walking, you can rent a horse for Q150 one way; bring cash in quetzals, as credit cards and foreign currency are not accepted at the volcano. The basic tour option does not include the entrance fee, so you will need to bring Q100 in quetzals to pay it when you arrive.
