itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Hike and explore Pacaya Volcano

  • Pickup from Guatemala City hotel
  • Drive 15 miles to Pacaya base
  • Hike 2.5 hours with expert guide
  • Stop at lagoon of Calderas viewpoint
  • View Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango volcanoes
  • Reach plateau with volcano crater views
  • Observe red-hot lava and steam baths
  • Rest and enjoy scenic landscape views
  • Hike back to volcano base

The first thing I noticed wasn’t the view—it was the smell. Sulfur, sharp and almost sweet, mixed with damp earth as we stepped out near Pacaya Volcano. Our guide, Luis, handed me a bottle of water with a grin like he knew what was coming (I guess he did). The ground felt gritty under my boots—lava rocks everywhere, still warm in some spots. We’d left Guatemala City behind less than an hour ago but it felt like another planet already.

Climbing up, I kept stopping to catch my breath—and not just because of the altitude. Luis pointed out Fuego in the distance, sending up a thin line of smoke that looked almost lazy compared to how my legs felt. He told us stories about past eruptions and how locals sometimes roast marshmallows here (I didn’t get to try that part—maybe next time). At one point a kid passed us on horseback, waving shyly. My Spanish is rough but he smiled anyway.

When we reached the plateau, there was this weird hush—just wind and the occasional crackle from somewhere below. You can’t go right up to the crater for safety (which honestly made sense after seeing those steam vents), but standing there looking out at Agua and Acatenango across the valley… I don’t know, it’s hard to explain. The clouds moved fast overhead and for a second everything went gold. I still think about that view when I’m stuck in city traffic now.
