The experience

The tour starts from your hotel and moves through the Americas Avenue, where monuments and sculptures honor Latin American leaders and cultural figures. You'll see the contemporary buildings and residential zones that define modern Guatemala City, then reach the Obelisco, which connects to Avenida Reforma: one of the city's main boulevards. Along Reforma, sculptures commemorate figures including Henry Dunant, founder of the Red Cross, and Miguel Ángel Asturias, the 1967 Nobel Prize winner in Literature. The avenue also carries the Monumento a la Madre, the Israel Plaza's Star of David, and statues of lions, bulls and wild boars. On Sunday mornings, part of Avenida Reforma closes to traffic for the Pasos y Pedales program, a pedestrian and cycling initiative by the city.

The Yurrita Church sits at the beginning of Reforma Avenue in Zone 9, its architecture distinctly different from the city's mostly Neoclassical religious buildings. Built as a votive offering by Felipe Yurrita in gratitude for surviving the 1902 Santa María volcano eruption, the church honors Our Lady of the Anguishes. From there, the tour moves into the historic center at Constitution Square (Plaza Mayor de la Constitución) in Zone 1, the downtown heart where the country's most important government, financial and administrative buildings stand. The Tipografía Nacional, a striking example of French Baroque architecture, now houses a museum of vintage printing machines. The Cathedral, an imposing twin-towered structure completed in 1815, survived three major earthquakes and holds the image of the Virgen del Perpetuo Socorro, the oldest Catholic image in Guatemala, brought by Hernán Cortés in 1522. The National Palace, built between 1939 and 1943, is now open as a museum and art gallery. Its ballroom hosted the signing of Guatemala's Peace Accords on December 28, 1986.

The Central Market is where the tour shifts from monuments to everyday life. You'll walk through corridors filled with tropical fruits and colors, and can taste traditional Guatemalan dishes like shucos, atoles and tamales, though food purchases are your own expense. The market is also a place to browse for souvenirs. The final stop is Ciudad Cayalá, a planned community built on 60 blocks of land donated by Grupo Cayalá more than two decades ago. Situated between two ecological reserves that serve as lungs for the city, Cayalá combines nature with modern amenities and spaces for religious, cultural and recreational activities.
