The Experience

I’ll admit it — I was nervous about stepping onto that little speedboat at the port in northern Zakynthos. The water was so clear it almost looked fake, and there was this salty breeze that made my hair stick up. The first real surprise hit me at the Blue Caves. Nikos slowed down and pointed out these arches in the rock where the sunlight turned the water neon turquoise. He let us jump in (I nearly lost my breath from how cold it was) and we floated under those stone ceilings, hearing nothing but our own splashing and some far-off laughter from another boat. It smelled like salt and limestone. I tried to say “thank you” in Greek — Efharisto? — but probably butchered it because Nikos just laughed and handed me a bottle of water.

And then Navagio Beach appeared around a bend, all white cliffs and that rusted shipwreck sitting crooked on the sand. We didn’t land (the waves were up), but Nikos got us close enough for photos. The color of the water there is ridiculous — like someone turned up the contrast too high. I still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck back at my desk. On our way back, we passed Xygia Beach where you can smell sulphur drifting off the water (not as bad as it sounds).
