Descend into Europe's deepest canyon and walk its riverbed to the far village

This guided hike crosses Vikos Gorge, the world's deepest canyon relative to its width, descending from Monodendri village through the riverbed and varied terrain to end at Vikos or Mikro Papigo village. The route takes 6 to 8 hours with a live English-speaking guide and includes light lunch. Kids aged 8 and over can join. You'll rest at the springs of the Voidomatis, one of Europe's cleanest rivers, and experience a mix of narrow passages and wider sections as the canyon opens and closes around you.

The experience

You start in Monodendri village and descend into the riverbed of Vikos Gorge itself. The hike follows a varied path (relatively rough only in a few stretches, fairly easy through most of it) as the canyon shifts between wide and narrow sections. The terrain changes as you move through it, and the combination of short duration and excellent views is what makes this the best-known trekking trail in the area.

Along the way you'll rest at the springs of the Voidomatis river, one of the cleanest waterways in Europe. The guide leads the pace and points out the landscape as it unfolds. Light lunch (homemade veggie pie, fruit and sweets) is included partway through. By late afternoon you reach either Vikos village or Mikro Papigo, a bit further on, where a minibus picks you up and returns you.

The trail runs year-round and stays open regardless of season. Bring your own hiking shoes and wear layers suited to the weather. The operator does not supply either. A moderate level of fitness gets you through comfortably, though the canyon's terrain and the full day of walking demand steady legs and a willingness to move at a steady pace.

What’s included

Is this one for you?Small groups work well here since the guide paces the day and the trail itself handles steady foot traffic. If you have a free afternoon or a morning to spare and want to walk into a major natural landmark rather than view it from above, this crossing fits: the 6 to 8 hours and moderate fitness demand are real, but the payoff is walking the riverbed of the world's deepest canyon.
