The experience

The day starts at the Acheron River estuary, where your guide runs through safety, paddling technique and the route ahead: roughly 11 nautical miles of water. Once you're in the kayak with your life jacket and dry bag, you cross the river mouth for about two nautical miles, moving through the shade of overhanging trees while the water stays cool and shallow. The birds are loud here. The current is gentle.

After the river crossing, you paddle into open coastline. This is where the caves appear: limestone openings in the cliff face that you can paddle straight into, and the water inside stays clear enough to see the bottom. Between the caves you'll find beaches with no road access, only water approach, and your guide picks a couple for a stop. You can swim here, or just rest on the sand before the paddle back to the Acheron.

The whole outing runs five hours. You'll need at least moderate fitness and comfort in the water. Children can join from age twelve. Kayaks come single or double, and the guide speaks English or Greek. Weather and availability set the actual date and time, so you'll confirm those directly with the operator before you book.
