The Experience

“You see that line in the cliffs?” our captain, Nikos, pointed as we left Vlychada Marina. “That’s where the island cracked open.” He said it so casually I almost missed it, but then you look up and realize he’s not exaggerating—Santorini really does look split by fire and sea. The wind was still cool that morning, not summer-hot yet, and someone behind me was already laughing about forgetting sunscreen. I liked that nobody seemed in a rush. The crew handed out towels and made sure everyone had a drink before we even got moving.

I’d seen photos of Red Beach before but standing there on the catamaran—red cliffs right against blue water—it felt different. You could smell salt and something faintly metallic from the rocks. We all jumped in (well, most of us—I hesitated until Maria from the crew grinned and said “Go!”). The water was colder than I expected but clear enough to see my own feet kicking below. A couple next to me tried snorkeling for the first time; their laughter echoed off those cliffs. I don’t think any of us cared how touristy it was—there’s just something about swimming here.

We drifted past White Beach and the lighthouse (Nikos told us it’s one of Greece’s oldest), then stopped near Nea Kameni for the hot springs. The sulfur smell hit me before my toes did—kind of like boiled eggs but not in a bad way? It surprised me how warm the water got closer to shore. My skin tingled for ages after. Lunch was simple: grilled chicken, rice, pasta with tomato sauce, salads with that lemony local olive oil. Someone spilled wine on their towel and nobody minded; we were all sticky with salt anyway.

On the way back along the caldera, some folks dozed in the sun while others tried (and mostly failed) to spot dolphins. The cliffs looked even bigger from below—white houses stacked like sugar cubes above black rock. I caught myself thinking about how old this place is, how many people have sailed these waters before us. That feeling stuck with me long after we docked again.
