The Experience
We were already barefoot by the time we stepped onto the yacht in Rhodes — sandals dangling from our fingers, a bit of sunscreen still tacky on my arm. The sea looked almost too blue to be real, but our guide Yiannis just grinned and said, “Wait till you see Anthony Quinn Bay.” He was right. There’s this moment when the boat glides past the headland and suddenly the water turns that glassy emerald shade you only ever see in postcards. I could smell salt and something herbal — maybe sage from the cliffs? Someone popped open a cold Mythos beer and passed it around like we’d all known each other longer than an hour.
We anchored at Ladiko Bay next, where tiny fish darted around our toes as we waded in. The snorkeling gear was just there for anyone to grab, so I tried it out (not very gracefully). Yiannis handed out plates with olives, feta, and these little tomato things that tasted like sunshine. At one point I caught myself just floating on my back, listening to laughter echo off the rocks and thinking how quiet everything else felt compared to home. It’s funny how quickly you forget your phone exists when there’s this much light bouncing off the water.
Later at Traganou Bay, some of us sunbathed while others wandered up to look at pebbles shaped like hearts (I kept one in my pocket). There was fruit — watermelon mostly — and more wine if you wanted it. We didn’t talk about schedules or what time we’d get back; nobody seemed to care. I still think about that last jump into the sea before we turned back toward Rhodes town, hair dripping, skin salty, everyone a little quieter in that good way after a long day outside.
