The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the hush — just soft waves tapping the hull as we pulled away from Lardos. There was this salty tang in the air and a low hum from the engine, but mostly it was just us and the wide blue. Our skipper, Yannis, grinned and pointed out some dolphins near Cave Island (I only caught a fin, but still). The coastline of Rhodes looked almost painted — white houses stacked up under that ancient sun. I kept squinting at Lindos in the distance, trying to spot the Acropolis before anyone else did.

We drifted close enough for photos — everyone took turns at the bow while Yannis told stories about pirates and old trading ships. I tried to say “kalimera” properly; his friend Li laughed at my accent (I deserved it). The water changed color as we neared the Blue Lagoon — suddenly it was this impossible turquoise, clear all the way down. Jumping in felt like waking up. There were masks and snorkels for everyone, so we floated around spotting little fish darting between rocks. Someone found a starfish — not me, though I pretended I did when my kid asked.

Lunch came out after we’d dried off a bit — grilled veggies, cold beer, olives that tasted sharper than any I’ve had back home. We sprawled on those netted front seats, sun-warmed and lazy. The crew kept bringing drinks without fussing or hovering too much. It’s funny how quickly you forget time out there; I had no idea how long we’d been anchored until someone mentioned heading back. The light on Lindos looked different then — softer maybe? Or maybe I was just tired in that good way you get after swimming all afternoon.
