The Experience

I’ll admit, I was a little nervous before we started the canyoning experience in Neda. Something about pulling on a wetsuit in the middle of the Messinian countryside — it just felt like I was about to do something out of my usual lane. Our guide, Yannis, handed me a helmet and grinned like he’d seen this look before. “Don’t worry, first time for everyone,” he said. The river sounded close by, that kind of rushing noise you feel in your chest more than your ears.

The walk down to the starting point was short but enough to make my heart beat faster — partly excitement, partly because I kept thinking about what ‘abseiling’ actually meant. The air smelled green (I know that’s not a smell, but you get it) and wet stone. Yannis gave us a quick rundown on how to use the harness and ropes; I fumbled with mine until Maria from Athens helped me out. We laughed about how city hands aren’t made for knots. Then suddenly we were at the edge of the first drop, staring down into water so clear you could see pebbles moving with the current.

I didn’t expect to enjoy sliding down natural rock flumes as much as I did — there’s this moment when you let go and just trust gravity (and maybe Yannis yelling “Go!” behind you). There were jumps too, nothing crazy high but enough to make your stomach flip once or twice. The cold water hit hard at first but then it felt good under the wetsuit. Somewhere along the way, someone pulled out a waterproof camera and snapped us mid-laugh — those photos are probably hilarious.

The last waterfall was taller than I thought — 25 meters, Yannis said — and rappelling down it felt like time slowed for a second. My hands shook a bit when I reached the bottom (not sure if from nerves or just adrenaline), but looking up at where we’d come from… yeah, that sticks with me even now. It wasn’t perfect or easy but honestly that made it better somehow.
