The experience
The day starts with a 15–20 minute abseiling course from your instructor before you ever touch a rope on the gorge itself. That short lesson covers everything you need to descend safely, so even first-timers move through the canyon with real confidence. You then trek up into Manikia Gorge, following your guide through the landscape, and practice on three shorter waterfalls before committing to the final 25-metre abseil. Between descents you swim in natural pools fed by the canyon's water, the kind of moment that justifies the early start from Athens.
The full day runs about four hours from the time you meet your guide. If you've booked the pickup option, your driver collects you from your Athens hotel and brings you to the village meeting point. If not, you make your own way to the central square. All the technical gear (helmet, harness, wetsuit) comes with the booking, along with professional photos taken during the day. If you've added lunch, you eat at a traditional local taverna after the activity ends, before the drive back to the city.
This is a physical day: the operator recommends a high level of fitness, and it's not suitable for anyone with spinal injuries, cardiovascular concerns, or pregnancy. Bring close-toed hiking shoes, swimwear, sunscreen and a change of clothes. The guide handles the rest of the technical setup.
