Summary

Wander Mykonos town, taste homemade treats, swim at quiet beaches

You’ll wander Mykonos Town with a local who knows every shortcut, pause for photos by iconic windmills and Little Venice, visit a peaceful monastery in Ano Mera village, then taste homemade Greek food before swimming or relaxing on a quiet beach—each moment feels honest and unhurried.

experience

What’s the experience like?

The first thing I remember is the wind — salty and a bit wild — as we stepped out in Mykonos Town. Our guide, Yiannis, was already waving at us from under a blue awning. He knew everyone; people called out to him as we wandered those narrow white streets. We stopped by the Kato Mili windmills for photos (I took too many, honestly), but it’s the way the light hit the sea that stuck with me more than any picture. Little Venice felt like it was always about to tip into the water, and there was this old fisherman mending his nets who nodded when we passed. I tried to say hello in Greek. Not sure I got it right — he just smiled.

We ducked into Panagia Paraportiani church for a minute of cool silence. It smelled faintly of wax and dust. Then Yiannis led us out again, laughing about how his grandfather used to tell stories of pirates hiding nearby (maybe true?). The day trip through Mykonos kept moving — but not rushed — and soon we were in Ano Mera village. It’s quieter there; you hear chickens somewhere behind stone walls and see old men playing backgammon outside tiny cafés. At Panagia Tourliani Monastery, the marble felt cold under my hand. I’m not really religious but there’s something steadying about old places like that.

Lunch was just… real food. Homemade spanakopita and olives that tasted like sun and salt. Someone’s aunt had made them, apparently; I believed it because they disappeared fast. Then off to a beach (can’t remember which one — they all looked like postcards). Some swam, some just lay back listening to cicadas and waves mixing together. I still think about that hour of doing nothing except feeling warm sand between my toes.
