The experience
How do you actually reach the hidden side of Meteora that sits off the main tourist loop? By hiking the paths the monks used to reach their monasteries. This tour picks you up from your hotel in Kalabaka or Kastraki and takes you on foot through the landscape to see ruins of destroyed monasteries from the Ottoman era, the working monastery of Ypapanti (reachable only by hiking), and the hermit caves built into the rocks near Kastraki village. Your guide speaks English and knows the history of how the first monks climbed these rocks and built their communities nearly 700 years ago.
The morning option includes free time to step inside one of the working monasteries and see the frescoes and architecture up close. The afternoon option trades that for a sunset viewing from a high point in the rocks. Both routes cover the same ground on foot, about four hours total, with the guide setting the pace and stopping to explain what you're seeing. You'll carry bottled water, and the van waits at trailheads to move you between the main sites rather than having you walk the whole day in one direction.
Monastery entrance fees run 5 euros per person for each one you enter, and that's separate from the tour price. The hike itself is moderate: you need reasonable fitness and steady legs on uneven ground, and the operator notes it's not suitable for young children, pregnant travelers, or anyone with spinal or heart concerns. Wear shoes with grip and bring sun protection.
