The experience

The hike starts at St. Nicolas Monastery in Kastraki and follows the same paths monks walked centuries ago, winding between the tall rock-towers. You pass beneath the ruined Pantocrator monastery on the north side of Dupiani rock, then descend into forest to reach the abandoned and restored Monastery of Ypapanti and the ruins of St. Dimitrios. The trail climbs uphill from there, and a short walk brings you to the cliff-top monasteries Varlaam and Great Meteoro, where you visit one of them. The return follows the ancient downhill path back through Kastraki, passing the cave of St. George Mandila where climbers traditionally hang scarves.

The full loop covers 7 kilometers with 320 meters of ascent and 323 meters of descent, taking 5 hours total. Your guide is a professional mountain trekker who speaks English and explains the geological significance of the rock formations and the history of the monasteries as you walk. You'll receive souvenir photos from the day. Pickup and drop-off from hotels in Kalambaka or Trikala is available as an option at checkout. If you choose it, the guide meets you at your accommodation and returns you there after the hike.

Dress code for the monasteries is enforced: men need shirts covering the shoulders and trousers or knee-length shorts. Women need skirts over the knee and clothing covering shoulders and chest. Bring comfortable hiking shoes or boots, a small backpack, a hat, sunglasses, sunblock and a waterproof jacket. Bring your own water bottle: the tour supports an environmental policy against single-use plastic.
