The Experience

“You see that rock? My grandfather used to say the sea tells its own stories here,” Nikos grinned as he steered us out of Agios Fokas. The morning air tasted salty and the water was that kind of glassy blue you only get on the north Lesvos coastline. I’m not really a boat person, but somehow it felt easy — maybe it was Nikos humming under his breath or just the sun making everything slow down. We drifted towards the old shipwreck first. The metal looked almost soft underwater, all rust and seaweed, and I could hear my own breath through the snorkel while little silver fish darted past. I lost track of time there — it’s weird how quiet it gets when you’re floating just below the surface.

Kommenos Vrahos was next, this big cut rock splitting the sand into two little coves. Some local kids were already climbing up (barefoot, of course), yelling to each other in Greek — I tried to copy them but slipped right away, which got a laugh from Nikos. There are caves tucked behind the rock where the water goes cold and then suddenly warm again if you swim far enough in. I didn’t expect that part; it kind of wakes you up, you know? We just floated for a while, listening to nothing but cicadas and our own splashing.

The last stop was Panagia Kryfti — this tiny chapel wedged into a rocky cove with wild thyme growing everywhere. The hot springs bubble straight into the sea here; it smells faintly like minerals and something green, maybe seaweed or those little herbs clinging to the rocks. Nikos handed out cold sodas and some snacks (I still think about those olives), and nobody said much for a bit because it felt like we’d found somewhere outside of regular time. On the way back, someone spotted dolphins off in the distance — or maybe they were just big fish? Either way, nobody argued.
