Eight hours crossing Greece's deepest gorge, from dense forest to riverbed to mountain peaks

Crossing Vikos Gorge is an eight-hour hike from Ioannina through Epirus, starting at Monodendri and finishing at the village of Vikos. A certified guide leads you through uphill, downhill and flat sections, past rare herbs and flowers, over old cobblestone paths and through the bed of the Voidomatis River. You'll rest at Klima spring with the gorge's highest and narrowest point behind you, swim in cold blue water, and pass through plane tree groves under the peak of Gamila.

The experience

The hike starts at Monodendri and follows the classic route through Vikos Gorge, which Guinness recognizes as the world's deepest gorge relative to its width. The trail shifts constantly: dense shade from thick vegetation gives way to dirt paths, then old cobblestone sections, then the riverbed itself. You'll climb uphill through landscape changes that keep the day from feeling repetitive, descend steeply into shaded areas, and cross through a grove of huge plane trees with the imposing peak of Gamila above. Over 186 species of birds and 1,800 species of plants live in the gorge, and you'll spot some during the hike.

Midway through, you reach Klima spring with cool water to refill your bottles and rest. The highest and narrowest point of the gorge rises behind you here. Near the end, the trail descends to the riverbed where you can swim in the Voidomatis cold blue waters and drink from the springs. You'll also pass the monastery of Panagia before the route finishes at the village of Vikos. A certified guide in English or Greek leads the whole crossing, and transfer from Ioannina city is included. Bring at least a moderate level of fitness. The eight-hour day involves sustained climbing and descending, and the terrain is uneven throughout.
