The Experience

Maria waved us over when we got out of the van in that first little village — I think it was called Krousonas? She had this gentle way of talking, half in Greek and half in English, and kept laughing at my attempts to say “kalimera.” The air smelled like woodsmoke and wild herbs. Our guide Nikos handed us tiny glasses of raki (I’m still not sure if you’re supposed to sip or just knock it back) and explained how his uncle still presses olive oil the old way. I could feel the warmth from the stones under my sandals even though it was almost evening.

The road up into the Cretan mountains got bumpier after that — Nikos joked that it was “Cretan massage.” At one point we stopped so he could show us a hillside covered in wild thyme. The sun was getting lower, turning everything gold. When we finally reached this high ridge, there were just a few goats for company and an open view all the way to Heraklion. We opened some sparkling wine (not fancy but cold and fizzy), shared fresh peaches from a crate, and just sat there for a while. It got quiet enough to hear crickets. I didn’t expect to feel so peaceful — maybe it was the altitude or just being far from everything.

Dinner was at this taverna where everyone seemed to know Nikos already. The food came out fast — roasted lamb, salads with tomatoes that actually tasted sweet, bread still warm from the oven. There was unlimited wine but honestly after the raki and bubbles I stuck with water for a bit (no regrets). Someone put on music and two old men started dancing by the door; nobody made a big deal about it but everyone smiled. We drove back down in the dark with windows open, smelling night air and oregano fields somewhere below. I keep thinking about that light on the mountains — kind of wish I’d taken more photos but maybe it’s better as a memory.
