The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the smell—warm engine oil mixed with wild herbs. Our guide Yannis handed me a helmet (I’m not sure I looked cool in it, but whatever) and ran through the basics of the quad bikes. Even if you’ve never driven one before, they make sure you’re good to go. We set off from Malia as the sun started dipping, and honestly, I didn’t expect the light to turn everything gold so quickly. It felt like we were sneaking out for some mischief.

We wound up rough tracks between olive trees, their leaves catching that weird silvery shimmer in the breeze. Stopped at this tiny chapel—Prophet Elias—where Yannis pointed out villages tucked into the hills. Someone’s phone played Greek pop quietly in the background. Then it was back on the quads for more off-roading; dust everywhere, but somehow it just made me grin harder. At an olive oil factory we tasted fresh oil with bread—peppery and almost grassy—and tried to say “efharisto” without mangling it too badly (Yannis laughed at my accent).

I wasn’t ready for how cool Milatos Cave would be. The walk up is short but rocky, and inside it’s all echoing drips and that earthy cave chill—even though outside it was still warm. Picked some wild thyme on the way back down; my hands smelled like summer fields after. We cruised through these fishing villages—Milatos and Sissi—with old men playing cards outside cafés and kids waving at us like we were celebrities or something.

The last stretch was pure fun: bumpy trails, a bit of mud (my shoes are still recovering), then finally dinner back in Malia. Simple food—grilled meat, salad, bread—but after all that riding I could’ve eaten anything. Sitting around with everyone swapping stories as it got dark… I still think about that view from the chapel sometimes, honestly.
