The experience
The tour begins at Syntagma Square and moves through the city's layered history. You watch the change of the Presidential Guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, then walk the National Gardens: originally planted for Queen Amalia in the 1800s and still laid out as a botanical space. A short stop at the Zappeion Mansion shows you the site of the first modern Olympic games in 1896, and from there you enter the Temple of Olympian Zeus, a Roman-era structure from the early 2nd century BC that frames the Acropolis in the background.
The route then climbs the south slope of the Acropolis through the Dionysos Theater, arriving at the Propylaia entrance. Your guide leads you through the monuments of the complex: the Parthenon at its center, the Erechtheion, the Temple of Nike, and the other structures that represent Athens at its height in the 5th century BC. Before reaching the Acropolis, you pass through Plaka and Anafiotika, the old neighborhoods with narrow streets, shops, and restaurants that show the traditional side of the city.
The skip-the-line tickets for the Acropolis and Parthenon are included if you choose the option at checkout. You can book as a small group or as a private tour, both with an official English-speaking guide for the full 3.5 hours. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. The route involves sustained uphill walking and uneven terrain.
