The Experience

The tour starts at Monastiraki Square, where your guide meets you holding an "Athens Walks The Food Tour" sign. From there you walk Aiolou Street and move through the neighborhoods where Athenians actually eat. The first stop is a traditional Greek breakfast of koulóuria—sesame bread rings—followed by a century-old pastry shop where you try loukoumades (Greek donuts) and custard-filled filo squares. You'll taste local pies and cheeses at authentic Greek bakeries before heading into the Varvakeios market, the city's central market where fish, meat and locally sourced products fill the stalls.

The route takes you down Evripidou Street, scented by herbs and lined with delis and spice shops, then through Theatrou Square where small local restaurants cluster. At a dedicated tasting stop you sample dark roasted coffee from one of the older coffee roasters downtown, along with local wine, organic olive oil, honey, seven-year-old aromatized vinegar and Greek yogurt. You wander through the funky art neighborhood of Psirri before ending at a local tavern where you explore mezedes plates—Greek tapas—and finish with souvlaki: chicken or pork gyros for meat eaters, with vegetarian options available. The tour concludes back at Monastiraki Square after 4 hours.
