itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Philosophical walk through Athens landmarks

  • Visit Ancient Agora of Athens
  • Walk through Athens Flea Market
  • Explore Hadrian's Library
  • See the Roman Agora
  • Visit Tower of the Winds
  • Stroll in Plaka neighborhood
  • Enjoy views from Pnyx Hill
  • End at Philopappos Hill at night

We started our philosophy walk right in the thick of Athens—Ancient Agora. I could almost hear the old arguments echoing off the stones (our guide, Yannis, joked that Socrates would’ve hated Instagram). The morning was warm but not too hot, and there was this faint smell of roasting nuts from a street vendor nearby. We stood where politicians and philosophers once argued about what makes a good life. It’s strange how you can feel both tiny and part of something big at the same time.

After weaving through the Flea Market—so many little shops selling everything from battered books to those evil eye beads—I lagged behind for a second to watch an old man haggle over chess pieces. Yannis waved us on with a grin. Hadrian’s Library was next; I didn’t expect to be so taken by the battered marble columns. He told us it used to be one of the biggest libraries in the world, which made me wish I could read ancient Greek (or even modern Greek, honestly).

The Tower of the Winds was my favorite surprise. It’s this octagonal thing that apparently worked as both a clock and weather station—Yannis called it “Athens’ first meteorological app.” There was a moment when we all just stood quietly listening to the city sounds drift up: scooters whining, someone playing bouzouki far away. Then came Plaka with its narrow streets and painted shutters; I got lost in thought watching a cat sunbathe on a stoop.

Pnyx Hill is where democracy supposedly started. We climbed up slowly (my legs complained), but seeing Athens spread out below made it worth every step. Philopappos Hill came last—the view over the Acropolis at dusk is something I still think about when things get noisy back home. The whole day felt less like ticking off sights and more like wandering through ideas with friends—even if most of them have been dead for 2,000 years.
