The Experience
The bus leaves Munich at 8:30am from Karlsplatz and climbs into the Bavarian Alps, passing Lake Chiemsee on the way to Salzburg. Your guide talks through the route, and you'll receive a printed city map marking the major sights, photo spots and narrow streets worth finding. Arrival in Salzburg is around 11am at the bus terminal on Paris-Lodron-Straße, leaving you roughly 2.5 to 3 hours on the ground.
The guide offers a 30-minute orientation walk through the old town if you want it, pointing out Mirabell Palace and Mozart's birthplace on Getreidegasse, and showing you Hohensalzburg Fortress rising above the rooftops—the largest preserved fortress in Central Europe. After that, the time is yours: eat lunch, shop, photograph the narrow streets, or climb up to the fortress. The pace is yours to set.
On the return to Munich, the route splits by season. From April through October, you'll stop at Lake Wolfgang for an optional boat ride across to St. Gilgen (about 35 minutes on the water); if you skip the boat, the coach takes you overland to the meeting point. From November 18 through December 18, the stop becomes the festive Christmas market at Lake Wolfgang instead. Either way, the drive back passes Lake Mondsee, where the wedding scene from The Sound of Music was filmed, before you return to Munich in the evening.
