The experience
The morning starts in Dresden's oldest fairground, moves through the rebuilt historic center with its patrician palaces, then enters the Frauenkirche for an inside tour that walks through the interior design and the church's historical reconstruction. From there, the route passes the Zwinger, the most famous fairground in Dresden, where a 25,000-tile Meissen porcelain mural depicts the Saxon princely family. The guide points out the former fortress wall that is now a promenade overlooking the Elbe and the flood plains.
After an hour's lunch break, the tour moves into the New Green Vault, where a personal guide walks through the treasury's collection of gold, silver and gemstones accumulated by the Saxon Electors. The pieces on display include the cherry stone carved with 185 faces and the Golden Coffee Kit: examples of European craftsmanship from centuries past. A guidance receiver system lets you hear the guide clearly throughout the vault.
The Semperoper tour closes the day with a guided walk inside one of Europe's most famous opera houses. The tour covers the building's unusual history and the music that has filled it, though the exact route depends on rehearsal schedules at the opera. If a particular date's Semperoper tour differs from the standard program, the organizer provides an alternative in advance. Postcards are included as a reminder of the day.
