Walk through centuries of Saxon power and Ottoman splendor in one afternoon

A guided tour of Dresden Castle combines the New Green Vault (home to the cherry stone with 185 faces and the Golden Coffee Kit) with the Turkish Chamber, parade rooms of Augustus the Strong, and optional access to Hausmannsturm for views across the Elbe Valley. The tour runs 2.5 hours on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday afternoons, with admission to all castle exhibitions included. Children under 16 enter free. A live German-speaking guide leads the route through the rooms. After the tour ends, you can stay inside the castle grounds for the rest of the day.

The experience

What makes this tour different is the focus on the objects themselves, not just seeing them, but learning their stories. The New Green Vault holds thousands of pieces collected by Saxon Electors: the cherry stone carved with 185 tiny faces, the Golden Coffee Kit, the centerpiece commissioned by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. The guide walks you through the Turkish Chamber next, where life-size horses wear saddles and bridles from Ottoman courts, and weapons that once terrified European armies sit behind glass. These are not replicas or reconstructions. They are the actual objects, arranged as they were centuries ago.

The route also passes through the Electoral Wardrobe (clothing studded with precious silk, gemstones and pearls), and from January onward includes the Small Ballroom. From October through early November, the parade rooms of Augustus the Strong open as part of the tour, with his throne room among them. The castle itself is the setting: you climb the gala stairs, pass through rooms designed to show power and knowledge around 1600, and move at a pace the guide sets. After the tour ends around 4 p.m., your admission ticket stays valid for the rest of the day, so you can return to any room or climb Hausmannsturm (the castle tower) on your own to see the panorama across Dresden and the Elbe Valley.

The tour operates February through December on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday afternoons. A German-speaking guide leads groups of up to 16 people. You receive a small postcard as a reminder and a receiver so you can hear the guide clearly. The castle is wheelchair accessible throughout, and strollers are welcome for infants and small children. Public transport stops nearby, and the transportation itself is wheelchair accessible.

Is this one for you?The tour runs a fixed 2.5-hour route on set afternoons, so you move at the guide's pace through the rooms rather than lingering where you choose. This structure is what keeps the major collections (the Green Vault, Turkish Chamber, and parade rooms) inside a single afternoon, and it leaves you with the option to explore on your own afterward with your day-long admission ticket.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (under 17).

What is the cherry stone with 185 faces that everyone mentions?

The cherry stone is a miniature carving on display in the New Green Vault: a single cherry pit carved with 185 tiny human faces, a masterwork of European craftsmanship from the Saxon court collections. It is one of the pieces the guide highlights as an example of the absolute precision and artistry in the treasury.

Can I visit the parade rooms of Augustus the Strong on this tour?

The parade rooms, including Augustus the Strong's throne room, are included from October through the end of the year. From January through September, the tour covers the Green Vault, Turkish Chamber, Electoral Wardrobe and other exhibitions, but not the parade rooms.

Is there time to climb the Hausmannsturm tower during the tour?

The guided tour itself does not include climbing Hausmannsturm. It ends around 4 p.m. However, your admission ticket is valid for the entire day, so you can climb the tower on your own after the tour ends (available April through early November for the panoramic view).

What language is the guide, and can I understand if I don't speak German?

The guide speaks German only. You receive a receiver so you can hear the guide clearly, but the tour is conducted in German. If you need interpretation or translation, you would need to arrange that separately.
