The Experience
I’ll admit it: I almost walked right past the blue bicycle at Potsdamer Platz—there’s just so much going on there. But then I spotted the little VIVE BERLIN flag and our guide waving (with a grin that honestly made me feel less like a tourist). He started us off underground, where the S-Bahn echoes in this weirdly hollow way. He called them “ghost stations”—I’d never heard of that before. The air down there had this chill, kind of metallic smell, and for a second I tried to imagine what it was like when trains used to just pass through without stopping. It’s not something you get from books.
Back above ground, we stood by the Berlin Wall itself. Our guide—Marco—didn’t sugarcoat anything. He told us about people who tried to escape, some who made it and some who didn’t. There was a moment when he pointed at a section of the Wall and just let us stand there in silence. I kept thinking about how quiet it was now compared to what it must’ve sounded like back then—sirens, dogs barking maybe? Someone in our group asked about the graffiti and Marco explained how these murals at the East Side Gallery turned into symbols of freedom after everything fell apart. I snapped a photo but it doesn’t really do it justice.
We wandered along Karl-Marx-Allee next—those big blocky buildings make you feel tiny, honestly—and Marco told us about life in the GDR. At Alexanderplatz he talked about protests that led up to the Wall coming down. There were families out walking their dogs, kids on scooters weaving between us… It felt strange hearing all this heavy history while Berliners just went about their day around us. I still think about that view from under those tall buildings with all that old concrete and new life mixing together.
