The tour starts at Pariser Platz and moves through the Brandenburg Gate: the royal entrance to Berlin that survived Napoleon, WWII and nearly 30 years trapped in the middle of the Berlin Wall before becoming a symbol of reunification. From there you walk to the Reichstag, the German parliament building infamous for the 1933 fire that enabled Hitler to seize total control, then fought over during the Battle of Berlin between Germans and Soviets. The glass cupola on top was designed by British architect Sir Norman Foster and lets you see the city from inside the building's history.
The route takes you through Bebelplatz, where the Nazi book burnings happened on May 10, 1933, and down Unter den Linden, the royal boulevard connecting the Brandenburg Gate to Museums Island. You'll stand at the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe (a massive site covered with stone stelae), and visit the Führerbunker, now a parking lot with a simple sign marking where Hitler spent his final days and died in the last weeks of WWII. Checkpoint Charlie, the famous Cold War checkpoint manned by Americans and Soviets, and one of three remaining stretches of the Berlin Wall show the division that lasted until 1989. Gendarmenmarkt, described as the most beautiful square in Berlin, holds the French and German Cathedrals and the Concert House. Potsdamer Platz, once one of Europe's busiest intersections in the 1920s, was almost completely destroyed in WWII and rebuilt as Berlin's most modern precinct in the 1990s and early 2000s.
