itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Explore Berlin's iconic landmarks

  • Visit Brandenburg Gate
  • See Gendarmenmarkt square
  • Optional stop at Führerbunker
  • Optional stop at Memorial to the Murdered Jews
  • Optional stop at Bebelplatz
  • Optional stop at Museum Island

We stepped out near Brandenburg Gate, and I remember the way the morning felt — not cold exactly, just that Berlin sort of crispness. Our guide, Jonas, waved at us like we were old friends. He started walking right away, pointing out the stone horses on top of the gate (I’d never noticed their faces before), and suddenly we were in the middle of Berlin’s history. There was a group of cyclists ringing their bells behind us and Jonas just grinned, “That’s normal here.” I liked that he didn’t rush — he let us linger by the columns for a minute while he told us about how this is the only surviving city gate. Someone nearby was selling pretzels and you could smell them in the air.

After that we wandered over to Gendarmenmarkt. Jonas said it’s probably Berlin’s prettiest square but shrugged like maybe he wasn’t supposed to pick favorites. The French Cathedral was catching the sun in a way that made it look almost gold — I tried to take a photo but honestly it didn’t do it justice. We passed by Bebelplatz too (I think?) — Jonas pointed out where books were burned during the war. It got quiet for a second. He didn’t make a big speech or anything, just let us stand there if we wanted. That part stuck with me more than I expected.

I asked him about places to eat that weren’t full of tourists and he laughed — said his favorite spot had terrible chairs but perfect schnitzel. He wrote it down for me on a napkin from his pocket (which I still have). The tour felt more like hanging out with someone who really lives here than ticking off sights. We only had 90 minutes but somehow saw Museum Island from across the river too, and Jonas kept throwing in little tips about which trams to catch or what time to visit certain places if you want fewer crowds. At some point my shoes started squeaking on the cobblestones and nobody cared.
