The Experience

I didn’t expect the silence to feel so heavy when we stepped through the gates of Sachsenhausen. Even the air seemed different—cooler, sharper than back in Berlin. Our guide, Marco, gathered us at Potsdamer Platz (he had this way of making everyone feel comfortable, even though most of us barely knew each other). He collected the €3 donation for the Memorial and made sure nobody got left behind before hustling us onto the S-Bahn. The train ride out was quiet; I caught myself staring at people’s shoes instead of talking.

Arriving at the Sachsenhausen Memorial, it hit me how close this place is to Berlin—just a short ride and suddenly you’re standing where 200,000 prisoners once lived. Marco started with a story about a young man from Milan who ended up here, which made everything weirdly personal. Walking under Tower A felt like crossing some invisible line. The gravel crunched under our feet as we moved to Roll Call Square; Marco explained how prisoners stood for hours in all weather. I tried to imagine that cold seeping into your bones—hard to picture on a mild day like ours.

Barracks 38 and 39 were especially hard. The walls still carry marks and names scratched by Jewish prisoners—Marco paused there longer than anywhere else. In the old kitchen-turned-museum, I lingered over a letter written home by one of the inmates (the handwriting was tiny and careful, like they were trying not to waste ink or hope). Station Z is something I still can’t quite put into words. It’s mostly ruins now, but standing there you can almost hear what isn’t being said.
